A World of Beauty: Masterpieces from the National Archaeological Museum of Naples has opened to the public from December 21, 2022. The exhibition is produced by Shanghai Lujiazui Development (Group) Co., Ltd. and co-organized by the Museum of Art Pudong (MAP) and the National Archaeological Museum of Naples (MANN), Italy. As one of the events included in the program of 2022 China-Italy Year of Culture and Tourism, the exhibition is supported by the Consulate General of Italy in Shanghai, the Italian Cultural Institute of Shanghai, MondoMostre and the Experimental Cinematography Center Foundation in Rome.
A World of Beauty is the first large-scale collaboration between MANN and a Chinese modern and contemporary art institution. It is not only a grand display of ancient Roman civilization from almost 2,000 years ago, but also the debut of many Italian national treasures in China, the majority of the exhibits have rarely left Italy to be represented in an overseas exhibition. The exhibition demonstrates pure beauty conceptually through the rich and precious historical-artistic collection from MANN. This world-class museum houses numerous antiquities from Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabia, as well as a series of works from the Farnese Collection.
The exhibition is placed on the first and third floors of MAP, and it is divided into three thematic sections: "Love and Beauty", "Power and Beauty" and "Life and Beauty." All the works, including sculptures, mosaics, frescos, bronzes, and glasswares, were made during the ancient Roman period and have a history of about two thousand years, reflecting the splendor of the Roman civilization in various ways. Highlights of the exhibition include Statue of Venus Callipyge, Herma of Pseudo-Seneca, Narcissus and Mosaic with Lion and Dionysian Procession, among others. A World of Beauty is a kaleidoscope of dreams from the past and show the modern patron how beauty is an enduring experience that evades definition.
