Joan Miró: Women, Birds, Stars

Joan Miró: Women, Birds, Stars opened to public at the Museum of Art Pudong on 8 July 2021. The exhibition presents a comprehensive range of Miro's works spanning the years 1940 to 1970, including paintings, sculptures, prints and fabrics. These works offer an insight into Miro's unique and fascinating language.

A master of 20th century surrealist painting on a par with Picasso and Dali, Joan Miró's works leave an impression of naivety and innocence. He was adept at using a limited number of symbols in a variety of combinations, and his works are full of metaphor and symbolism. Miró systematically narrowed the range of colours he used to just a few basic ones and built up a formal vocabulary consisting of a series of terms: figures, women, birds, the moon, the sun, stars, the ladder of escape ... These symbols are often expressed through lines and blocks of colour without clear and specific images, however the freedom and brightness are reminiscent of children's graffiti.

In addition to the exhibition, MAP has released a bilingual publication, Joan Miró: Women, Birds, Stars, which features a systematic reading of Joan Miró's unique artistic vocabulary by curator Jordi J. Clavero, as well as an essay by the artist's grandson Joan Punyet Miró titled Joan Miró and the Mediterranean Atmosphere, which shared his precious memories of Miró. The book is a systematic survey of Miró’s recurring themes through four sections: A Vocabulary of Signs, The Sign in Freedom, The Object, and The Black Figures. In addition, the book includes high resolution images of all the exhibits, as well as photographs by Joaquim Gomis and the archive provided by the Fundació Joan Miró. In these images, we see the artist in the print shop, at the foundry, and in his own studio. It brings us closer to the wonderful abstract world the artist created, and lively recreates Miró’s creative processes and life.

The binding is designed in a 170 x 240 mm format, which is light, portable and easy to read. The lively and dynamic design of the binding echoes the artist's unique style.
